Technical Features
Air Frame construction
Air Frame Construction is used on the Comfort Deluxe self inflating mat. The cross-cores (longitudinal and transverse) provide a level of stability previously unknown in self inflating mats.
This construction radically reduces the bounce commmonly found in PU foam mats - in the Double version, one sleeper can turn over without disturbing the other sleeper.
Solution Dyed
Solution dyeing is a process where dye is added to the liquid polymer before the fibre is extruded. The benefit of this technology is that energy and water use as well as C0₂ emissions are significantly reduced. In solution dyeing, the colour runs throughout the yarn, not just on the surface as it would with conventional dyeing. This is easy to imagine if you think of the cross section of a carrot (colour throughout) compared to a radish (colour only on the exterior). Solution-dyed colours may not be quite as intense, but they also do not fade like conventionally-dyed materials.
ASTM R-VALUE
To create a sleep system appropriate for anticipated conditions (especially when the ground is colder), it is essential to know how well a sleeping mat resists heat loss into the ground. This resistance is known as an R-Value. Sea to Summit has always provided independent lab-tested R-Values for its sleeping mats. Since January 2020 we have used the industry standard ASTM F3340 test. Other factors determine how well a sleeping mat will insulate; but the standardised ASTM test is a good starting point for comparing performance across brands. Not all published R-Values are lab tested. Look for the 'ASTM F3340' icon - if this is not present, it is likely that the R-Value has been estimated.
bluesign APPROVED
bluesign is a system run by an independent, Swiss-based third-party group that monitors every step in a supply chain to ensure the use of the most benign materials. bluesign APPROVED is a recognition that the manufacture of materials in a product creates the fewest emissions and least pollution. It also signifies high standards for humane conditions for workers and material safety standards for consumers.
XPEL valve
The Sea to Summit XPEL valve was the first valve developed specifically for self-inflating sleeping mats. It integrates a one-way inflate port, a large deflate port and a fine-tune button into a single, low-profile unit. The genius of the XPEL valve is that to deflate the sleeping mat, the valve is flipped over, allowing air to escape but not return into the mat. This turns the one-way inflate valve into a one-way deflate valve - preventing the mat from drawing itself full of air as it is rolled up.The XPEL valve fits the nozzle of an Airstream pump (sold separately) if you want to 'top up' your self-inflating mat which you can also do manually.
Side loading Stuff Sack
Supplied with all 2026 Sea to Summit self inflating mats, the side-loading stuff sack solves the perennial problem of trying to pack a sleeping mat end-on into a stuffsack. Loosen the drawcord, drop in the rolled-up mat, cinch the drawcord tight and you're ready to pack the mat in your bag. Who thinks of things like this? We do.

Frequently Asked questions
How should I best store my Comfort Deluxe Mat?
Ideally, an SI Mat should be stored unrolled with the valve open - perhaps laid flat under a bed. If this is not possible, store loosely rolled with the valve open.
Can the Coupler Loops join two Regular mats together?
Coupler Loops are only designed for mats up to 3" / 8cm thickness - they will not work with Comfort Deluxe mats
How do I inflate my sleeping mat the first time, and on future uses?
When shipped from the factory, the self-inflating mats are vacuum packed. For first use, open the valve(s) and leave the foam to 'unstick' and expand. Subsequent use: the mat will inflate to atmospheric pressure - add air using the built-in pumpsack in the stuffsack
How do I find a point of air loss in a Comfort Deluxe mat?
Inflate the mat, soak the surface (in sections) using soapy water - bubbles will indicate air loss
